GBMS - Reducing container loss

GBMS - Reducing container loss delivers software and hardware to actively and real-time monitor the force loads on containers and their lashings. This system helps identify risks before, during, and after a container ship’s trip, such that appropriate action might be taken. Fewer lost containers mean less environmental pollution, next to financial losses, a safer working environment, etc!

I am placed in the very center of their operations and bear responsibility for the software that brings their solutions to their clients; building APIs, creating new functionalities and integrations, setting up effective database operations and logging, and improving and testing the corresponding parts of the codebase.

To me, this assignment touches on a lot of what I am looking for:

  • My expertise has a direct and substantial impact
  • I am given responsibilities and the freedom and trust to fulfill them as I think is best
  • The project and its stack align with my learning goals and vision
  • Fully in my combined field
  • A strong connection to the maritime practice, with the possibility to witness that up close

Highlight: Sailing with a container ship

In April 2024, I accompanied GBMS onto a containership of a client; to install, test and observe the interactions with their systems, always with future improvements and the end-user’s needs in mind.

We boarded the ship in the Rotterdam harbor during the container off-on loading process, and after transit and an additional day of anchorage, disembarked again in Bremerhaven. This page is not meant to give a detailed account of all impressions gained during this 4-day trip; I let some pictures give an impression.
